This will be very time-consuming, and every hour or so you should place your cake into the fridge and leave it for around 15 minutes to rest and harden.

HOW TO GET AN AIRBRUSH EFFECT ON A CAKE WITHOUT AN AIRBRUSH?

It’s impossible to achieve a completely airbrushed look without using an airbrush. The closest you’ll be able to get is by painting by hand. However, unless you’re exceptionally good at this, it may be best to invest in an airbrush for the best results.

HOW TO SPRAY GLITTER ON A CAKE?

Spraying glitter on a cake sounds way more difficult than it has to be! Let’s take a look at a step-by-step guide.

  1. Before you begin, it’s best to frost your cake how you want it to be frosted and then chill it in the fridge for around 5 minutes.
  2. Remove from the fridge and fill your manual airbrush with your edible glitter (this can be an individual color or a mixture of colors).
  3. Then you can begin spraying. That’s right, all you need to add to your airbrush is edible glitter; no other ingredients are required.

If you have ever built anything using wood from scratch, have wanted to smooth out a surface, or have needed to polish a surface, chances are, you have used a sander. Wet sanding is a helpful technique that gives even better results. But, can you wet sand with an orbital sander?

You can use an orbital sander to wet sand, but should take safety precautions to ensure that neither your tools nor you get hurt. Additionally, wet sanding normally makes fine adjustments to a surface, something an orbital sander may not help you with.

Using an orbital sander to wet sand can be beneficial, but only if done correctly. Read on to learn more about wet sanding, orbital sanders, and how the two can be compatible.

What is Wet Sanding

Wet sanding, similar to “normal” or dry sanding, is a process that can help polish or perfect a surface. Wet sanding involves some sort of an abrasive and a liquid, like water, to sand down a material.

The liquid involved in wet sanding removes any remaining particles leftover from the dry sanding process and particles created in the final wet sanding.

However, this method isn’t suitable for every surface as it can do more damage than good. For example, wood surfaces get damaged when they come in contact with water, so dry sanding is preferred for them.

An orbital sander, also called a random orbital sander, is a handheld machine used to sand down a surface. The sander works through a ball-bearing mechanism attached to the actual sanding pad. When you use the machine, the sanding pad rotates at random intervals of diameter and circumference. It means, while the machine may always be going in one direction, the actual circles it makes will be of differing sizes. This feature is incredibly helpful to prevent having one part of the surface sanded further than the other as the orbital sander makes sure no same circle is done twice.

Additionally, the orbital sander is great at covering a wide surface area over a shorter amount of time than doing it by hand and helps ensure the surface is consistent with no large scratches at any point. Orbital sanders are most frequently used for preparing a surface for painting, but can also be used to sand down a small area very quickly.

Considerations When Wet Sanding With an Orbital Sander

With an orbital sander, though you could wet sand the blemish to make your car gleaming, you may cause other blemishes that would need to be removed. Generally, orbital sanders aren’t the best fit for the job when it comes to wet sanding.

While you can use an orbital sander for wet sanding, make sure everything is safe, including yourself and your tools. Using any electric power tools with liquid can be risky. If the water makes contact with the motor, for instance, or if your connecting wire is frayed and water makes contact with it, you run the risk of electrocution. Most orbital sanders won’t shock you hard enough to be deadly, but they can certainly hurt. Be sure to use air sander or proper safety equipment.

One of the best ways to protect your gear is to opt for sanders with double insulation that can prevent water from getting in. Additionally, considering the safety of your sander is important. If your sander gets water on it and it begins to oxidize, rust can wear out your orbital sander, quickly making it both unable to work with and possibly dangerous. 5 Things You Need to Know When Choosing Airbrush Compressor

Airbrush compressor is one of the essential items for airbrushing; unfortunately, it also happens to be one of the most expensive. When you’re new to the hobby, it’s difficult to understand what to look for in a compressor, leading many novices to buy an airbrush compressor that is a poor fit. Before you purchase a compressor for airbrush, take the time to read these five things you need to know about choosing a proper airbrush compressor.

1. What Is Auto-off Function and How Important to Have It?

Even on a small airbrush compressor or a portable airbrush compressor, noise is always going to be a factor. While you’re can’t eliminate the noise of a compressor for airbrush altogether, you can mitigate that noise by buying a compressor with an auto-off function. When your compressor is not in use, i.e. when you’re not spraying, the auto-off function will automatically shut it off. The auto-off feature helps reduce noise by as much as 75 percent, making for a more relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately, compressors with the auto-off feature cost more than those without it; if you’re low on cash, make sure you’re buying an airbrush compressor with the essentials you need before going for extra features such as the auto-off function.

2. Is Power Important? How Much Output Is Enough for Me?

The answer to this question will vary from artist to artist, coming down to a variety of factors including what you’re using the compressor for, the airbrush type and the nozzle size. In general, more power is always better, but extra power can lead to extra weight so keep that in mind.

If you’re looking for a small airbrush compressor for little jobs like painting nails, 10 LPM is more than sufficient.

For larger jobs, such as modeling, motorcycles or body-art, you’ll want to look into at least 20 LPM.

For jobs bigger as a car or truck where you’d like to use larger nozzle for background, you’re going to want to go with a compressor that has a rating of 30 LPM or more.

3. Do I Need a Moisture Trap?

Whether you’re a novice or an expert, a compressor having moisture trap is not essential for any airbrush but is still helpful. As the name implies, a moisture trap is a device that reduces moisture by a significant amount, leading to less paint layer defects. A moisture trap will collect all of the water from a session into a receptacle, ensuring that the water won’t mix with the air. However, keep in mind that you’ll need to drain the trap regularly. If your airbrush compressor does not have a moisture trap, you can purchase one separately and install it right onto your airbrush.

4. Do I Need a Airbrush Compressor With Tank and Why?

The decision over whether to purchase an airbrush compressor with or without a tank comes down to your budget and the specific job you have in mind. There are currently three different options on the market, each with their pros and cons.

An airbrush compressor with no tank is the cheapest option and will work continuously while your airbrush is in use. Unfortunately, compressors with no tank are prone to pulsation, which can lead to defects on your project. However, you can decrease the amount of pulsation by using a coiled air hose in conjunction with the tankless compressor.

Like a compressor with no tank, an airbrush compressor with a small tank, will work continuously. However, unlike the compressor with no tank, a small tank will eliminate most of air pulsation going from compressor’s piston to your airbrush. The majority of light tanks are roughly 0.3 liters, adding only a small amount of weight to your compressor. For artists who are looking to work on large, time-consuming pieces in peace and quiet, opt for the compressor with the large tank. These tanks are typically two or more liters, have zero pulsation and will turn off when you reach max pressure, even if the airbrush is still in use. The large tank also has the added benefit of reducing the amount of moisture that the airbrush is outputting.

5. Do I Need Pressure Gauge and Regulator on My Compressor?

For novices, having a pressure gauge on your compressor is a necessity. While expert artists can judge the amount of pressure just by the variations in color coming out of the airbrush, novices won’t have the skills necessary to judge pressure accurately by sight. Not only are you able to tell exactly how much pressure you’re using with a gauge but it also helps to let you know that your compressor is working properly.

If you’re just starting out, every compressor you buy, including a portable airbrush compressor, should have a pressure gauge or else you won’t be painting to the best of your ability. The regulator is also self-explanatory; in short, a regulator helps regulate the amount of pressure sent to the airbrush. For jobs that require a precise level of adjustment, controlling the amount of pressure will ensure you’re using just the right amount. SANDBLASTING VS. SODA BLASTING

Sandblasting and soda blasting are two of the primary ways to clean or prepare a surface for industrial coatings. The two are similar when it comes to their processes and equipment, but the difference comes down to their materials and applications. In some instances, either one can be used while sometimes one has a clear advantage over the other.

What exactly is the difference between the two? Is one better than the other? How much does each one cost, and what are their benefits? There are many questions to answer before choosing one method. Knowing the purpose of each process will help narrow the options for different projects and ensure optimal results with beautiful finishes.

What is Sand Blasting?

Sand blasting, also called abrasive blasting, is the older and better-known option of the two. This process involves using compressed air to force abrasive material at a surface in order to remove rust, paint, or debris prior to applying an industrial finish like paint or powder coating. 

Contrary to its name, sand is no longer the primary material used in sand blasting. Sand is less durable and effective due to its tendency to break down and turn to powder on impact. In this way it is similar to the material used in soda blasting. Other media like glass or plastic beads, steel grit, and even walnut shells are better suited to use in sand blasting. Some of these materials can be recycled, as they are much stronger than sand and are less likely to be destroyed.

Sand blasting essentially provides the same type of finish as hand sanding, but more evenly and efficiently. It requires some specialized equipment like an air compressor, blast cabinet, and blast room. The equipment used depends on the method that best suits the project at hand. 

Portable air compressors are pressurized and filled with blasting material and can be transported to the project site and the sand blasting is done in a more open space. Blast cabinets are ideal for recyclable material, as they collect the media after it has been used so it can be gathered for a future project. In this case, the operator performs the sand blasting with the piece in a small, enclosed cabinet. Meanwhile, a blast room serves a similar purpose to the cabinet, but on a larger scale. Blast rooms are used for vehicles, construction equipment, and aircraft, though dust and media collection systems can still make it possible to reduce waste and recycle materials.

Sandblasting is most often used on metal due to the strength of the media and air pressure. It is one of the most efficient preparation methods and the best one for rust removal. It cleans surfaces quickly, and because of the variety of media used in the process, its uses are just as versatile.

One of the most significant downsides to sand blasting is the health risk. Sand blasting creates a large amount of dust, which can cause respiratory problems, and pressurized application can cause burns on unprotected skin. There are also fall risks from media left underfoot, as well as excessive noise and heat potential. Most of these dangers can be addressed and prevented using the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

What is Soda Blasting?

Soda blasting is a process much like sand blasting. The two can overlap in certain circumstances, but in general, they serve different purposes. The main difference lies in the material

Sodablasting is a newer form of abrasive blasting that was invented in the 1980s and is milder than sand blasting. It uses sodium bicarbonate—otherwise known as baking soda—and, with equipment similar to that used in sand blasting, blasts the particles against a surface to clean it. While soda blasting can be used to smooth surfaces for coating preparation and remove rust, it is primarily used to clean.

Soda blasting is especially effective on surfaces like wood, chrome, and plastic. In other words, surfaces that are softer or require a gentler touch work well with this type of blasting, as it is less likely to damage the surface. Because of the low risk of distorting the surface, soda blasting is suitable for use on a wide variety of surfaces. It is especially practical in automotive restoration, cleaning wooden surfaces like decks and doors, and cleaning in masonry applications.

Sodium bicarbonate is also a deodorizer. This makes it ideal for mold removal and cleaning up after fire damage. It is also a more fragile material than those usually used in sand blasting, which means it breaks upon impact and creates a lot of dust. For this reason, respiratory protection is needed.

What’s the difference between the Sandblasting and Soda Blasting?

The differences between sand blasting and soda blasting go beyond their applications and materials. Where sand blasting might cause damage, soda blasting is ideal for the job. Meanwhile, where soda blasting can be used on the same surfaces and for many of the same purposes, sand blasting is more efficient and can clean or strip a surface of rust and paint much more quickly than soda blasting.

Sandblasting is applied using much greater pressure than soda blasting. Soda blasting may use only 20psi, but sandblasting can use anywhere from 70 to 120psi. This alone creates a vast difference in how well they work in various scenarios, as air pressure is one of the main factors in their strength.

Sometimes, however, soda blasting can offer more advantages in rust removal. Not only can it remove the rust, but it prevents it from forming again. With sand blasting, the industrial finish has to be applied immediately because of the danger of flash rusting. However, it creates a protective film over the surface after blasting and allows for some time to pass between preparation and coating, as it prevents the surface from rusting quickly. Once the final coating is ready to be applied, the sodium bicarbonate film can be removed with water and vinegar or scrubbed away, ready for the new coat.

Another key difference is its environmental impact. While sandblasting media is sometimes recyclable, it also is not always environmentally friendly. Materials like corn cobs and walnut shells are an exception here, as they are biodegradable, but other materials like metal and plastic beads are not. Sandblasting also creates much more dust than soda blasting, which means that when the materials used are already harmful, this creates airborne hazards as well as potentially toxic residues.

Sodium bicarbonate is much better for the environment. The material is water-soluble and will not build up in water or contaminate living spaces of humans or wildlife. Since baking soda is actually edible, this means it will not cause harm if ingested—as long as it does not have grease or paint mixed in with it. Sodium bicarbonate does create dust in the same way sand blasting materials do, but it is less dangerous to breathe. However, that does not mean protective equipment should not be used.

Using sandblasting gun and soda blaster also have different health impacts beyond the environment. While the dust from sandblasting can cause silicosis among other respiratory illnesses, it is less dangerous to breathe particles from sodium bicarbonate. However, PPE is still necessary, as breathing too much of any substance can cause problems.

How Much Do Sand Blasting and Soda Blasting Cost? Is sandblasting expensive?

Between the two, soda blasting is slightly more expensive. This is to be expected, considering many environmentally friendly options do cost a little more. In some cases, this can be well worth the investment based on equipment performance and the end result.

Starting materials for soda blasting include a blast generator, compressed air supply, a blast hose and nozzle, and a moisture decontamination system, as well as sodium bicarbonate as a recurring cost. Sandblasting, on the other hand, requires an air compressor, blast pot, and a blast gun, which in total costs less than the soda blasting materials.
